Niagara-on-the-Lake, often called the most charming town in Ontario, has a long and distinguished history. Site of the old Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, it was settled at the close of the American Revolution by Loyalists coming to Upper Canada, many of whom had been members of the much feared Butler's Rangers based during the American Revolution at Fort Niagara, then under British control.
The rich history of Niagara-on-the-Lake, originally the capital of Upper Canada, is reflected in the architecture of many of the century homes and historic sites of the Old Town including Fort George, built in 1792, the old Apothecary, dating from 1866, and the Historical Museum.
A short scenic drive along the riverside parkway is the wonder of Niagara Falls. In addition to the natural beauty and drama of the falls there are many attractions catering to a wide range of tourist tastes: botanical gardens, living butterfly collections, museums, jet-boat rides, cable car trips, the Casino, to name a few.
While away the afternoon taking a stroll or horse drawn carriage ride along the tree-lined streets of the Old Town enjoying the charm of the historic houses, the parks and the lake. Niagara-on-the Lake is a destination that offers something for everyone and the special atmosphere here is a delight any time of the year.
